LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A bill updating Kentucky's medical marijuana laws passed the House this week.

Last year, lawmakers passed a law allowing cannabis use in 2025 for people with certain medical conditions. Medical cannabis would be dispensed as a topical medicine, edible version or vaporized cannabis. Vaporized cannabis would only be allowed for those over 21.

This year, House Bill 829 would also address medicinal marijuana use for K-12 students.

The bill would allow public and private schools to opt out of the program and if a school district chooses to allow students to use it at school. The district would just need to establish a policy.

The bill would also require a pharmacist consultation to make sure the drug doesn't have a negative reaction with a patient's other prescriptions.

Gov. Andy Beshear took executive action in 2022 to relax the state's prohibition on medical cannabis but he has said it's no substitute for outright legalization, which required legislative approval. Beshear's action allows Kentuckians suffering from a number of severe health conditions to legally possess small amounts of medical marijuana properly purchased in another state.
